Summer-Joy (nickname: “S.J.”) started her career as an Intern at Amblin DreamWorks SKG while receiving her undergraduate degree from UCLA’s School of Theatre, Film & Television. Main has since worked extensively in film and media production, including serving as Director of Development for Merchant Ivory Productions and Story Analyst for New Line, Walden Media and Radical Media. Main has produced, line produced and production managed nearly 20 short films, feature films, commercials and music videos, which have screened in hundreds of film festivals worldwide and garnered over 50 awards.
Main has worked closely with a number of the film industry’s top production companies and filmmakers, including Stanley Donen. Main’s focus as Producer is in the development and production of both US-based and international productions. Her command of language and story structure was earned through Story Analyst positions at New York-based production companies, as well as through the ownership of an international essay-editing firm.
Main received a BA from the School of TFT at UCLA in 1996, and an MFA in Film from Columbia University’s Graduate Film Division of New York in 2005. Main is now a PhD ABD at the European Graduate School of Switzerland, where she has studied with renowned filmmakers and philosophers including Claire Denis, Atom Egoyan, Margarethe Von Trotta and Slavoj Zizek. Main is currently completing her dissertation on the role of the Film Producer of American Cinema and she will complete her PhD degree in 2012.
Main is a regular contributor to The Huffington Post on the subjects of Film and Latino Themes in Cinema, and she is the Founder of the Latino Film Fund, a non-profit organization with a mission to support the production of and appreciation for Latino-themed films.
Main has been selected for competitive talent development programs including those of Film Independent (FIND), the Independent Film Project (IFP), and the National Association of Latino Independent Producers (NALIP).
Main is Costa Rican American and was raised in Cambria, California.
