Hey, check it out! Rich Mintz at ARTSblog has a great write up of a presentation done at the Americans For The Arts National Convention by our very own Camille Schenkkan (currently serving on the National Emerging Leader Council.)
Rich sez:
…Two of the smartest things I heard at this conference came out of Camille’s mouth during this part of her presentation. For one thing, she said “if you hate a social media tool, don’t use it.”

What other inspirations did you carry home from the AFTA convention?
Thanks, Krystal! You rock!
I kept thinking about the relationship between ‘culture’ and ‘art.’ Broad terms, overlapping, not quite identical. I attended a session that seemed to be equating culture primarily with ethnicity, but to me it’s much broader than that.
I attended a couple of sessions about the Cultural Economy. They both talked about extending the world of “arts and culture” beyond the non-profits and public agencies we usually think about, to include things like creative for-profit entities and creative entrepreneurs. Things like boutique architecture firms and art supplies stores come to mind, as well as some groups focusing on ethnicity and historic preservation.
Everyone involved agreed that before taking on a project related to cultural economies, a person or organization has to define who is and is not included. For example, the City of Ventura included jewelry stores and a person from Alaska did not.
All of the talk about creative entrepreneurs got my creative juices flowing about new ideas for my career… we’ll see!
