INTERNSHIP: Education and Community Programs, L.A. Opera

LA Opera seeks an Education and Community Programs Intern who will report to the Associate Director of Education and Community Programs. The intern will be an integral team member in the producing and presenting of programs for the community both at the Music Center and throughout Los Angeles County. Specifically, the intern will be further developing our College Advisory Committee, now in its second season, by researching and creating an inventory of college opera outreach programs and helping to create a network of such programs, activating the “campus ambassador” program of the Committee, working with staff to establish sub-committees, and devising an “Opera U” publicity campaign.

Internship activities will also include providing support to outreach initiatives including the community opera Noye’s Fludde and management of volunteer Community Educators and Library Project. The intern will participate in planning and production meetings to observe the process of producing operas and arts education programs. Schedule may include some nights and weekends.

Qualified candidates must receive credit from an accredited college or university for the internship. This is an unpaid position. Graduates may be eligible as long as college credit can be received.

INTERNSHIP: Music Research (Credit Only)

The LA Opera seeks a Research Intern who will report to LA Opera’s Richard Seaver Music Director, James Conlon. The intern will help research and assemble an annotated chronology of Maestro Conlon’s career for use in company promotions and publications. Internship activities will include communicating with the publications staffs at opera companies, symphony orchestras and schools in the US and throughout the world. Research activities may also include compiling materials such as recording lists, critical reviews, and work samples.

Qualified candidates must receive credit from an accredited college or university for the internship. This is a non-paid position. Qualified candidates will have a highly disciplined work ethic, excellent communications skills, and superb research skills with meticulous attention to detail. Candidates should be currently pursuing a degree in music (preferably at the graduate level) and be multi-lingual. As well, he or she must be computer literate with some experience in Windows, Microsoft Office, and database software. Graduates may be eligible as long as college credit can be received. Hands-on Experience for Aspiring Arts Managers: Kennedy Center Internships

As one of the largest, busiest performing arts centers in the world, the Kennedy Center and its leadership have developed extensive expertise in performing arts management. Founded in 2001, by Kennedy Center President Michael Kaiser, the DeVos Institute offers competitive Internships for aspiring arts managers to gain critical hands-on experience in many areas of performing arts management. DeVos Institute Interns develop valuable relationships in the industry by training with Kennedy Center Staff within departments aligned with their interests. Interns also gain a broad understanding of the performing arts industry by participating in weekly seminars and activities, attending Kennedy Center performances and events, and connecting with a vast network of DeVos Institute alumni.

DeVos Institute Internships are full-time (40 hours per week) or part-time (20-30 hours per week) unpaid opportunities. Interns may receive transportation assistance, complementary tickets to Kennedy Center performances, and/or academic credit upon request. Internships are offered in many Kennedy Center departments including: Fundraising; Marketing; Education; Programming; IT; Production Management; Institutional Affairs; DeVos Institute of Arts Management; Washington National Opera; and National Symphony Orchestra.

Title: Research Intern

Rate of Pay: $2,500 stipend / approved travel expenses reimbursed
Period of Time: November 2011 – February 2012
Hours/Schedule: Flexible, to be determined
Preferred Deadline: Friday, November 4, 2011 / Position Open Until Filled

About The Project
The California Association of Museums (CAM), in partnership with other organizations
across the state, will embark on a one-year planning project titled California Networks for
Collaboration. The purpose of the project is to examine how museum service providers
can adopt 21st century practices and explore if collaborative learning networks that are
connected and leveraged statewide will produce more accessible and sustainable
support systems. A research intern is needed to inform the work of the Steering
Committee meeting.

Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Executive Director, and in accordance with the
organization’s policies and procedures, the Research Intern will:
▪ Attend an initial meeting with the Executive Director and the project
consultant (via telephone) to discuss expectations, timeline, and scope of
work. This meeting will take place at a mutually agreed upon time.
▪ Search for and identify learning networks that support museum professionals
in California through online searches, telephone calls, and a questionnaire
completed by Steering Committee members and others TBD.
▪ Perform a literature scan and review on collaborative learning, particularly
how these methodologies may be employed by associations or other service
providers, to inform the work of the Steering Committee.
▪ Participate in conference calls or face-to-face meetings with the Executive
Director and project consultant as needed.
▪ Review and discuss research with the Executive Director and project
consultant and change research methods and/or make edits to final report as
needed and requested.
▪ Submit a final report for distribution to Steering Committee members in early
February 2012.
▪ Attend the Steering Committee’s meeting in February 2012 in Berkeley to
report on the findings of the research and literature review.

Minimum Requirements
▪ Excellent research skills
▪ Good writing and communication skills
▪ Ability to work with little supervision with appropriate guidance/training
▪ Familiarity with concepts of collaborative learning, 21st Century skills, and/or
museum work preferred

Marketing/Public Relations Intern (Credit only)

Los Angeles Opera currently has internship opportunities in our Marketing/Public Relations department. These positions are available to hard-working students interested in film or online communications. Responsibilities will include creating and editing videos and podcasts for the web and ensuring that materials meet the Marketing/PR goals of the Company.

Qualified candidates must receive credit from an accredited college or university for the internship and be able to intern part-time through December 2011. Scheduling is flexible depending upon interns’ academic schedules. These are non-paid positions. Graduates may be eligible as long as college credit can be received. Applicants must have excellent communication skills and an entrepreneurial attitude with disciplined work ethic. Candidates must be computer savvy and have video creating or editing experience. No experience with opera is required. Limited weekend and evening work may be required. Upon completion of an internship, interns will receive a detailed written evaluation and have multiple projects to add to their portfolio.

Artistic Administration Intern (Credit Only)

LA Opera seeks an Artistic Administration Intern to plan the logistics for guest artists coming to Los Angeles Opera for productions in 2012. The intern will perform a research project to help secure foreign artist work visas. Research activities will include compiling each artist’s materials such as recording lists, critical reviews, and work samples. Interns may be in touch with the artists’ managers, other opera companies or even the artists themselves to secure the necessary support materials for the visa applications. The intern may also research travel and housing options and prepare arrival information for these artists. The intern will report to LA Opera’s Artist Services Manager.

Qualified candidates must receive credit from an accredited college or university for the internship. This is a non-paid position. Graduates may be eligible as long as college credit can be received. Candidates must be computer literate with some experience in Windows, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, database software, and e-mail. Interest in opera or music is a plus. This internship will take place in Summer 2011 and hours worked will be determined with the selected candidate.

Activities will also include reviewing and organizing general submissions from performers, updating Company production records, and assisting with the organization and running of departmental auditions.

The intern will attend planning and production meetings and take notes in order to observe the process of producing operas and arts education programs. Some telephone usage, filing, record keeping, and database management are also involved. Schedule may include some nights and weekends.

Qualified candidates must receive credit from an accredited college or university for the internship. This is a non-paid position. Qualified candidates will currently be pursuing a four-year degree, and must be computer literate with some experience in Windows, Microsoft Office, and database software. Graduates may be eligible as long as college credit can be received. Knowledge of and/or interest in opera or classical music is a plus.
