Highways PT Development Associate

Highways Performance Space is seeking an experienced part-time Development Associate to provide support in achieving fundraising goals. This position reports directly to the Executive Director.

Highways (highwaysperformance.org) develops and presents innovative, socially engaged art that challenges the dominant sexual, psychological and political paradigms of contemporary American society. Our programs explore relevant social, politicaland artistic issues, promote interactions among people of diverse cultural identities and foster critical dialogues among artists and the communities they serve. Major Responsibilities Include:

- Tracking deadlines, preparing documents and support material for the acquisition of corporate, foundation and government grant awards.
- Assisting in the innovation and implementation of fundraising campaigns.
- Processing and tracking donations, gift acknowledgements and revenue accumulation.
- The scheduling of Box Office Personnel for weekly performance functions.
- Acting as liaison between the Executive Director and various grant program representatives.
- Engaging, recruiting and supervising an extensive roster of volunteers for weekly performance functions and office support.
- Negotiating general administrative duties such as data-entry, filing, on-line interfaces, the scheduling of meetings and the directing of phone calls.

Qualifications and Competencies Include:

- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to multitask, prioritize, and work well under pressure to meet multiple competing deadlines
- Strong Mac computer skills and general office experience as well as an overall interest in non-profit/alternative arts organizations is a must.
- Familiarity with government and regional grant-making, Filemaker Pro and the Cultural Data Project are a plus.

Compensation: The compensation range for this position is competitive, depending on qualifications.

Position purpose
Provide organizational control of the finances and required reporting to effectively manage the activities of the Orchestra.

Scope & Responsibilities

  • Establish/maintain internal controls in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles, non-profit requirements and audit standards. Manage and maintain accounting and record keeping for all organizational activities.
  • Supervise Accounting Assistant. Prepare monthly reports for review and discussion with the Executive Director, Finance Committee and Board of Directors.
  • Complete annual orchestral survey documents and grant financials as necessary.
  • Assist the staff in the preparation of the annual budget by department.
  • Facilitate the annual audit. Prepare necessary schedules and documentation for the organization’s auditors.
  • Maintain staff and musician personnel records, insurance, and other benefits.
  • Manage compliance with records retention requirements.

Duties

  • Record daily cash activity.
  • Monthly bank reconciliations
  • Supervise invoice processing
  • Supervise payroll processing
  • Record Investment activity in monthly financials
  • Monitor cash receipts & disbursements
  • Review general ledger detail frequently for proper classifications
  • Maintain support schedules for audit purposes
  • Interact with staff regarding policy and procedures
  • Assemble the annual budget detail with each department
  • Finance Committee monthly reporting
  • Participate in Special Event activities as required
  • Attend concerts as necessary
  • Other relevant duties as necessary and assigned.

Experience/Characteristics Required
The ideal candidate is an experienced accountant with at least a bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 5 to 7 years of relevant experience. Strong technical and hands-on supervisory skills are a must. Non-profit experience required. For-profit experience in cost accounting or job cost desirable. QuickBooks and Excel software skills are necessary. Experience with development/fundraising and ticketing software a plus. Multi-layered reporting and/or cost accounting background essential. Interest in classical music and the performing arts desirable.

Community Programs Associate (part-time)
LA Opera seeks a Community Programs Associate for their fast-growing, award-winning Education and Community Programs department. Reporting to the Associate Director of Education and Community Programs, the Community Programs Associate is responsible for the coordination of LA Opera’s community outreach programs, developing community relationships, managing the volunteer-staffed Community Educators and Library Project, and administering college programs.

Qualified candidates will be highly organized and have a degree or experience in arts, arts management or arts education. Applicants will have worked extensively in Word, Excel and Outlook, and have experience with database applications. Qualified candidates will also demonstrate the ability to attend to detail in a fast-paced, multi-tasked environment and have strong written and oral communication skills, as well as an aptitude for interacting well with the public. Bilingual a plus but not required.

This is a part-time position, offering approximately 29 hours per week. There is some flexibility in setting hours during the business week; however, the work schedule may vary and will include some nights and weekends.

Education Programs Assistant (part-time)

LA Opera seeks an Education Programs Assistant for its award-winning Education and Community Programs department. Reporting to the Education Manager, the Education Programs Assistant will provide general administrative support and coordination for the Opera’s education and community programs staff. This position will also assist in the planning and implementation of education programs, projects and events.

Qualified candidates will be highly organized and have a degree or significant experience in arts, arts management or arts education. Applicants will have worked extensively in Word, Excel and Outlook, and have experience with database applications.
